Dr. Paul Heidenreich is professor and vice chair for Quality in the Department of Medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine.  He received his MD at the University of Chicago and completed an internship at the University of California, Los Angeles, followed by internal medicine residency, cardiology fellowship and an imaging fellowship at the University of California, San Francisco. 

Heidenreich has been on the Stanford University faculty for over 20 years working at the Palo Alto VA Health Care System, and Stanford Health Care as a health services researcher and non-invasive cardiologist with a clinical focus on imaging and heart failure. He has over 450 peer-reviewed publications in the areas of on cardiovascular outcomes, quality of care, imaging and health economics. He has examined variation in quality of care at the hospital and facility system level, including Veterans hospitals and hospitals participating in the American Heart Association’s Get-With-The-Guidelines program. 

He has also designed and conducted multiple randomized trials examining the use of the electronic medical record to improve quality of care. Much of his time is spent as a research mentor for numerous trainees and multiple junior faculty for their career development awards. He has led numerous quality efforts of the American Heart Association, and other professional societies,  including serving as chair of the ACC/AHA Task Force on Performance Measurement, the ACC/AHA Task Force on Data Standards, Writing Committees for ACC/AHA Atrial Fibrillation and Heart Failure Performance Measures and the Steering Committee for the Get-With-The-Guidelines Registries.
